- Abstract
Transparent glass-ceramics in the TeO2-SiO2-AlF3-CaO-NaF-NdF3 system with different Nd 3+contents were prepared. The effect of heat treatment schedules on crystallization behaviour and microstructure were analyzed by differential scanning calorimetry, x-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy. SiO2 was identified as the major crystal phase and β-NaCaAlF6 as the minor crystal phase. The grain size was in the 30-50 nm range and some limited aggregation was observed. Three main fluorescent bands centred at about 900, 1062 and 1333 nm were attributed to 4F3/2→4I9/2, 4F3/2→4I11/2 and 4F3/2→4I13/2 transitions, respectively. The maximum emission intensity were obtained with the precursor glass and glass-ceramic that contained 1·0 mol% Nd3+ content. Nd3+ ions were incorporated into the crystal phases; the increase and decrease of fluorescence intensity were due to changes in the local environment and concentration quenching.
