- Abstract
Objective: To analyze the knowledge of pregnant women living in rural communities about breastfeeding. Methods: This was a descriptive study conducted during the period of February and March 2020 in four rural communities in a municipality in the state of Ceará, the sample was composed of 19 pregnant women. A form was applied while the pregnant women were waiting for the prenatal consultation at the basic health unit. Results: The pregnant women had good knowledge regarding the concept and benefits of breastfeeding, and management of breast engorgement, however, they had important deficiencies regarding the correct technique for breastfeeding and the conservation of milk. And the health professionals that the pregnant women reported having received the most incentive to breastfeed were the nurses (31.6%) and then the community health workers (26.3%). Conclusion: There is a need to promote effective training strategies for pregnant women, with emphasis on the handle and the correct position to avoid early weaning and milk conservation, aiming to improve rates of exclusive breastfeeding in working women.
