- Abstract
The article presents a study on the prevalence of systolic and diastolic heart failure. The study measured ejection fraction (EF), diastolic function and brain natriuretic peptide in residents of Olmstead County (Minn.) with heart failure. The study examined 556 participants through echocardiography. EF was associated with older age, female sex, and no history of myocardial infarction. The study concluded that over half the patients examined with heart failure have preserved EF, while 40% have isolated diastolic dysfunction related to higher levels of brain natriuretic peptide.
