- Abstract
The article discusses the painting on the cover of the issue, "Rosa mundi," by Esther Heins. The rose has been featured throughout religion and myth, connected to Venus and Adonis, the garden of Eden and the Virgin Mary. The rose on the cover is a shrub rose, the first variety of the flower to be cultivated in Europe. Rosa mundi was first mentioned at the end of the 16th century and was part of William Aiton's catalog of plants at the Royal Botanic Garden at Kew, "Hortus Kewensis." Esther Heins is a renowned botanical painter with works hanging in the major American museums. The rose on the cover is inscribed "for Annabel," Heins's granddaughter, who now keeps the painting in the office of her orthopedic practice at Johns Hopkins.
