- Abstract
Presents a reprint of "The Coming of Age of Phagocytosis," which was published 100 years ago in the January 20, 1906 issue of JAMA. Professor Metchnikoff published two articles on phagocytosis in 1884 and wrote a book on immunity. The controversy surrounding Metchnikoff's theory is mentioned, and a quote from Lord Lister's presidential address at a British Association meeting is provided. The theory of phagocytosis is said to be aligned with cellular pathology and physiology. Metchnikoff is quoted on his idea that phagocytosis could prevent septic complications after surgery.
