The article examines the life and work of African-American scholar Ralph Ellison. It discusses the sociological and cultural dimensions of racial distinction in the United States, the consequences of racial obsession, and how the African American experience is often clouded over in American society. It cites examples of these concepts in several of Ellison's essays, including "Twentieth-Century Fiction and the Black Mask of Humanity."
