- Abstract
An artificial sediment was spiked with elemental sulfur and a lubricant oil. The measured toxicity in a microbial solidphase test with Bacillus cereus was markedly enhanced when compared with the effects of the individual toxicants. The joint action was interpreted as augmentation of elemental sulfur toxicity due to facilitation of its solubility by oil components. These results show the demand for consideration of the entire contamination where sediment toxicities are to be assessed.
