- Abstract
The article discusses the life and career of Hungarian architect László Hudec, focusing on his construction of many buildings in Shanghai, China. Hudec was an important figure in the development of Chinese architectural modernism. The author details Hudec's struggles to gain Chinese citizenship and his exile in Siberia. Emphasis is given to the architectural design of various Hudec Shanghai buildings, including the Park Hotel, the China Baptist Publication Society and China Christian Literature Society headquarters, and the Grand Theatre.
