- Abstract
Maleic anhydride grafted styrene-ethylene-butylene-styrene block copolymer (SEBSg- MAH) and the oxazoline functionalised recycled ABS (R-ABSm) were used as the compatibiliser to improve mechanical properties of R-HIPS/R-ABS blend, especially the impact strength. Mechanical testing showed that the impact strength of R-HIPS/RABS blend was improved from 2 to 9 kJ/m2 when the weight ratio of R-HIPS/R-ABS/ SEBS-g-MAH/R-ABSm was 7:3:1.5:0.4. SEM showed phase interface between rubber phase and matrix phase of the blend became fuzzy indicated that the interfacial adhesion between rubber phase and matrix phase of the blend was improved. DMA test proved the compatibiliser was obtained in situ chemical reaction between the oxazoline of R-ABSm and carboxyl group of R-ABS. The results from the variety of tests were possibly attributed to that interface strength between the rubber phase and the matrix phase of the blend was reinforced through the chemical reaction. In addition, this reaction played a positive role which was conductive to the improvement of impact strength by means of increasing the rubber content in R-ABS.
