Evaluation of severity of ternporomandibular disorders and prevalence of parafunctional habits in military policemen.

- Abstract
Purpose To estimate the occurrence of temporomandibular disorders, their severity and the presence of deleterious habits in a population of non-patients comprising military policeman. Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted with an inductive approach and a technique of extensive direct observation using a questionnaire. ThE sample included 148 military police officers of both genders. The questionnaire evaluated the variables of the characterization of the sample (gender, age, marital status and educational level), rating and degree of temporomandibular disorders by Fonseca's Temporomandibulai Dysfunction history index and questions about para functional habits. The level of significance used in statistical tests was 5% and the intervals were obtained with 95% confidence. Results Subjects' age ranged from 18 to 36 years old, 77.7% ma/es and 22.3% female. Temporomandibular disorders were diagnosed in 49.3% of respondents, 38.5% of which had mild temporomandibular dysfunction, 7.4% had moderate temporomandibular dysfunction and 3.4% hac severe temporomandibular dysfunction, treatment being required in the last two situations. According to the evaluation of parafunctional habits of patients with temporomandibular disorders, 89.5% ground their teeth, 73.3% clenched their teeth, 50% bit their fingernails 76.2% bit objects, 69.2% chewed bubblegum and 57.1% bit their cheeks. Conclusion Temporomandibular disorders were present in approximately half of the population of the study with a significant association with thE para functional habits analyzed.
