- Abstract
The International Journal of Molecular Sciences published a Special Issue titled "Polyphenols and Their Impact on Human Health," which collected articles on the innovative applications of natural polyphenols in nutrition and biomedicine. The issue includes five research articles and three reviews covering topics such as the antioxidant and wound closure abilities of polyphenol-rich extracts, the preparation of pH-responsive nanoparticles with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, the hepatoprotective effects of hydroxycinnamic acid metabolites, the benefits of a polyphenol-rich beverage on lipid metabolism, the anti-proliferative effects of hydroxytyrosyl oleate on human neuroblastoma cells, the interaction of dietary polyphenols with gut microbiota, the therapeutic effects of polyphenols against urinary tract infections, and the preventive and therapeutic effects of phenolic compounds in neurological conditions. The authors of these contributions come from various countries, including Italy, Spain, Korea, Germany, Bulgaria, and Slovakia, highlighting the broad research field on polyphenols. The articles emphasize the need for a deep understanding of the structure and properties of polyphenols to fully exploit their potential as functional ingredients in the health, food, and cosmetic sectors. The contributions also identify research priorities, such as exploring underexplored sources of polyphenols, developing novel applications and formulations, studying the role of polyphenol metabolites, and conducting in vivo human studies.
