- Authors
Schiermeier, Quirin
- Abstract
This article discusses the postponement of Russian plans to drill into lake Vostok, which lies below the East Antarctica ice sheet. The drilling effort poses legal and environmental issues because research projects in that region are subject to review by countries who are party to the Antarctica Treaty. Concerns about the biological impact of exposing this environment to anthropogenic chemicals and are discussed. The process of discovering subglacial lakes with the use of radar is also explored.
