- Abstract
Phytoremediation by aquatic macrophytes is a technique that has been widely studied and has shown satisfactory results. This process generates, however, a large amount of biomass. This biomass when contaminated by heavy metals cannot be disposed in the environment. Therefore, this study examined the feasibility of reuse of the biomass Pontederia parviflora in the production of ceramic blocks. To this end, a solution with a concentration of 1,000 mg/L of copper was treated with P parviflora for a period of 5 days. Copper concentrations were determined before and after the treatment period. Specimens of clayey masses were produced with 5% and 10% of contaminated biomass. The quality of the blocks was analyzed according to the main tests described in the literature. The copper removal rate of the solution at the end of the experiment was over 96% and the concentration of this metal in the biomass exceeded 1,200%. The experimental results of the parameters analyzed were fully satisfied for all specimens (CP) prepared with addition of 5% and for most CP containing 10% were satisfactory, according to IPT determinations (1985), NBR 7170 (ABNT, 1983) and NBR 7171 (ABNT, 1992). Thus, it is concluded that the fitotreatment of effluents contaminated with copper by P. parviflora and the reuse of their biomass in the production of ceramic blocks are viable.
