FORMAL AND FUNCTIONAL RESTRICTIONS ON THE PRODUCTIVITY OF WORD FORMATION RULES (WFRs).

- Abstract
This article talks about formal and functional restrictions on the productivity of word formation rules (WFR). It notes that word formation (WF), and the problem of productivity of WFR in particular, has not been given its due attention in the early days of generative grammar. Recent developments in the study of WF give priority to questions about principles which determine the productivity of WFR and the properties which distinguish productive from unproductive processes. A better understanding of these problems is necessary not only to define the concept of a WFR in a more detailed way, but also to describe the WF component and find a place for it in the model of generative grammar. Hence, this article seeks to investigate one approach to the study of productivity in WF, namely, the one in which the productivity of a WFR is measured in terms of competence restrictions.
