- Abstract
This paper concerns historians working at the University of Pisa after Italian unification. It sets the record straight as a history of academia while making no claims as a history of historiography, although a clear link between people and attitudes to culture emerges through the generations. Starting with Villari and Crivellucci, followed by the frequently-recurring Volpe, an unbroken line of direct and indirect contacts, influences and relations connects practically every major figure here. This is largely because Pisa was of national rather than local importance in the study of History, and the presence of the Scuola Normale made this all the more so. Each of those involved was a strong individual and their fields of research and interest were never limited by the confines of academia, all of which has made Pisa a vital part of this predominantly Italian scientific community.
