- Abstract
The article explores the writings of social scientists Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels on the history, politics, and economics of Ireland and on French magistrate Gustave de Beaumont. Particular focus is given to Irish self-determination and independence and the Irish working class. Details on Marx and Engels' attitudes towards Beaumont's investigation of American prisons and his book "Marie, ou l'escalavage aux États-Unis" are also presented. Other topics include Marx and Engels' support of the Fenian movement, their views on the relationship between Ireland and England, and Engels' account of Irish immigrants in Manchester, England.
