- Abstract
Titanium is the most common implant material due to its resistance to body fluid, high mechanical strength, light weight, and biocompatibility. Huiying Jia and Lei L. Kerr demonstrate using pure TiO2 nanotubes and polymer/TiO2 nanotubes composite as drug carriers for the potential application of local drug delivery from titanium implants. Kinetics studies show that drugs releases from these two carriers are pH dependent and determined by the drug solubility, degree of polymer swelling, and electrostatic force between polymer and drug. This study suggests that controlled release could be achieved for polymer/TiO2 drug carrier via the modulation of pKa values. (DOI: 10.1002/app.41570)
