- Abstract
In this work we shall examine the representation of Hernán Cortés (1485-1547) in both Italian and Prussian opera, and in Spanish and French theater during the Age of the Enlightenment. We shall emphasize in particular the relationship between the Spanish conqueror from Extremadura and the Mexica Emperor Montezuma II (r. 1502-1520). Four works form the basis of our analysis: 1) Motezuma: Tragedia en tres jornadas (1784), by Bernardo María de Calzada (1750-1825); 2) the Spanish translation of Fernand Cortès; tragédie (1744) of Alexis Piron (1689-1773) titled Hernán Cortés: Tragedia (1776); 3) the opera Montezuma (1733) by Antonio Vivaldi (1678-1741) and Girolamo or Alvise Giusti (1709-1766); and 4) the opera Montezuma (1755) of Frederick the Great, King of Prussia (r. 1740-1786), and the composer from Brandenburg, Carl Heinrich Graun (1704-1759).
