- Abstract
We thank Dr. Holcomb, his coauthors, and the editors of I Transfusion i for highlighting this critical issue and publishing guidelines for civilian walking blood banks (WBBs) in times of emergency.1 As the authors point out, blood transfusion is a logistically complex process that requires maintenance of donors, availability of skilled personnel, efficient pathogen screening, and maintenance of a cold chain among many other things. Holcomb et al.'s article provides guidance on how to work around such a disruption with the establishment of a WBB, a just-in-time transfusion strategy refined in the military and since employed in HIC civilian settings to address emergent shortages.
