- Abstract
The article discusses a study which determined whether mitochondrial dysfunction or insulin resistance was the primary event during high-fat (HF) diet. Rat models were fed an HF diet for 40 days and compared with control while soleus and tibialis muscle mitochondrial activity were assessed using permeabilized fiber technique. Tibialis weight increased after 20 days in the HF group and after 14 days in the control group. It concludes that defects in muscle mitochondrial OXPHOS activity could predispose insulin resistance.
