- Abstract
Older people, particularly those with grandchildren, may be increasingly exposed to the problems surrounding drug abuse. From two Senior Centers in Miami, 25 elderly subjects completed a drug scale containing informational and attitudinal items; for comparison, social work students (N=28) and policemen (N=25) completed the scale. Correlations between the elderly's demographic data and scale responses did not show consistent relationships; the senior citizens differed significantly from social workers and police. Although the elderly seemed well informed regarding drug use, their attitudes, to a great extent, appeared to be based on stereotypy and were expressed through agreement with punitive statements concerning the treatment of users.
