- Abstract
The article discusses U.S. Supreme Court cases relating to 19th century merchant Stephen Girard's bequest to Girard College, a boarding school for poor white children in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Topics discussed include the challenge of Girard's will by his relatives in the 1844 case Vidal et al. v. Girard's Executors, and the challenge of the school's policy of accepting white males only in the 1957 case Pennsylvania et al. v. Board of Directors of City Trusts of the City of Philadelphia.
