- Abstract
The article discusses the outcomes of a service provided by a cystic fibrosis (CF) carrier testing clinic for couples planning a pregnancy. CF is a severe medical condition that results in reduced life expectancy. Couples who carry the gene mutation that gives rise to the disease have a one in four chance of bearing a child with CF. The clinic offered CF testing by collecting DNA samples from couples. It was concluded that CF carrier testing was able to detect 80 per cent of couples at risk of carrying the disease.
