- Abstract
The article presents information on a special issue of "Journal of Multicultural Counseling and Development," on Asian and Pacific Islander Americans. Ethnic minority groups, who are at high risk for psychological dysfunction because of such factors as discrimination, racism, inadequate education and health care, unemployment, and acculturation stress, already receive less than adequate mental health services. To meet the needs of ethnic minorities, development and evaluation of effective counseling methods must be promoted to provide quality mental health services. The special issue acknowledges that there are differences both between members of Asian and Pacific Islander American groups and within these groups due to various elements such as gender, acculturation, level of ethnic identity, geographic location, reason for immigration, history of the group in the United States and in their country of origin, economic status, age, social support, education, class, and religious beliefs.
