- Abstract
This article focuses on anatomy and approaches for urological surgical access, with specific reference to retroperitoneal and transthoracic anatomy and surgical approaches. The article describes advantages of flank approaches and mentions that this approach is extraperitoneal, and causes minimal disturbance to the abdominal viscera and decreases the risk of contamination of the operative field. Drainage of the space is easy. While pointing out its disadvantages, the article mentions that it is difficult to access the upper pole of the kidney especially if the kidney lies in a high position.
