- Abstract
While arthralgias are seen in IE, frank arthritis or tenosynovitis is less common, so an alternative diagnosis was sought for our patient. Viral arthritis While many viruses can cause arthritis, particular attention was paid to this patient's HIV diagnosis. Although the arthritis-dermatitis syndrome is more common - with >60% of patients presenting with either polyarthralgias, tenosynovitis, or dermatitis compared to ~40% with purulent arthritis ([4]) - it has now been demonstrated that these clinical syndromes overlap and likely exist on a spectrum. They distinguished between 2 clinical syndromes: 1) the arthritis-dermatitis syndrome that is characterized by a triad of dermatitis, tenosynovitis, and polyarthralgias and 2) purulent arthritis - often presenting with monoarthritis without characteristic skin lesions.
