- Abstract
This article, part of a thesis, aims to analyze the contributions of the Teaching Residency Program - PRD - of the Federal University of Juiz de Fora - UFJF - to becoming a mathematics teacher. For that, a qualitative research was developed, and for the production of data, a questionnaire and interviews with two mathematics teachers who were new to the teaching career and who participated in the program as residents were used. This study demonstrated that Brazilian educational systems have paid little attention to beginning teachers, and there is a lack of public policies to support the insertion and permanence of these teachers in the labor market, which can lead to high dropout rates from teaching. In addition, the professional teaching induction presents several challenging situations, such as the feeling of loneliness, the devaluation of the teaching profession, students' motivation, the curriculum, the know-how and being a beginner teacher, and the development of a professional identity, among others. In view of this, there must be public policies aimed at those beginning teachers and attention, help, and support during the first years of professional teaching in an attempt that they overcome, discover, and survive professional initiation in the field of teaching mathematics.
