- Abstract
This article discusses the decline of federalism in the U.S. There have been two classic criticisms of the structure of American federalism: it is too strong or too weak. These criticisms have been countered by two styles of argument: political geometry and political sociology. Geometricians argue that federal structure is built into national policymaking so the central government is effectively prevented from subsuming state governments. On the other hand, sociologists simply state that structure need not and does not equal function. Nevertheless, the confusion and concern over what to call federalism is a reflection of a deeper anxiety over what is coming.
