- Abstract
Rapid industrialization and societal advancements have resulted in significant gaseous pollutants emissions, particularly sulfur dioxide (SO 2). This notorious pollutant poses a threat to ecosystems, contributes to acidic rain formation, and leads to the corrosion of equipment and infrastructure. To address these concerns, the catalytic conversion of sulfur dioxide to elemental sulfur, a benign and valuable product, has gained considerable attention. Despite numerous studies on this method, a lack of comprehensive knowledge regarding its benefits and drawbacks has hindered its widespread adoption and implementation. In this comprehensive review, we present a detailed analysis of the subject, encompassing various reductants employed, reduction mechanisms, catalyst types, methods for catalyst improvement, diverse operational conditions, lesser-explored aspects, and potential solutions for enhancing this technique. It is expected that examining the recent developments and fundamental evolutions that have taken place in this field leads to a full understanding of this technique and open the way for its development and implementation in the industry.
