- Title
PD-1 blockade: rescue from a near-death experience.
- Authors
Blattman, Joseph N.; Greenberg, Philip D.
- Abstract
The article shows that in vivo blockade of the inhibitory molecule PD-1 can restore the function of exhausted CD8+ T cells during chronic viral infection. Abruptly removing such cells from chronic antigen stimulation does not restore function, suggesting that adaptation of T cells to the chronic infection environment results in a requirement for T cell receptor stimulation for cells to survive. Blockade of PD-1 is sufficient to rescue CD8 T cells from exhaustion.
