- Abstract
Background. The phenomenon of aggression against paramedics is becoming more and more common, and it manifests in the media. The incidence of verbal and physical aggression is increasing. Paramedic is a person who helps others but facing aggression he is the one who may need more such help. It is therefore worth monitoring the problem on an ongoing basis in a structured manner. Aim of the study. The aim of the study was to characterize aggressive behaviors addressed to paramedics, their causes and legal and non-legal consequences associated with them. Material and methods. The survey study included 53 paramedics using specially designed questionnaire. Results. The problem of aggression towards medical rescuers was observed to be very serious. 98.1% of respondents confirm that they have experienced this phenomenon, 75% of them believe that it occurs frequently. The most common type of aggression turns out to be screaming, raised voice and insults. The majority of respondents never reported cases of aggressive behavior towards them, and even if such actions were taken, they most often ended up with the lack of serious consequences. 54.7% of respondents believe that equipping paramedics with stun guns or pepper gas could be prevent the attacks. Only 45.3% of the respondents are able to obtain support after an aggressive incident, 83% of them point to its necessity. Conclusions. The obtained results suggest ineffectiveness of counteracting aggression against medical rescuers and insufficient form of support after the incident. The possibility of using specialist support after an aggressive incident in all Emergency Medical Teams should be considered a standard procedure.
