- Abstract
The article discusses humans' biological and social connections to food production and consumption, collectively referred to as the global food system by the authors. The authors assess the impact of food system industrialization on environmental and social sustainability during a time of increased thought on international food security. They examine how people seek to re-connect to the food system, which is largely privatized, through the use of locally-sourced food initiatives that connect producers, consumers, and products. Re-connection also broadly connects humans with nature. Such initiatives include consumers growing their own food, producer-consumer partnerships, and direct selling approaches such as farmers' markets.
