- Abstract
The article reports on the therapeutic use of colchicine extracted from the autumn crocus' corm and the three-year market exclusivity right granted by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to pharmaceutical firm URL Pharma Inc. based on the results of a trial it conducted on the dosing of oral colchicine for acute gouty arthritis and additional safety data. The marketing right enabled the firm to increase the price of colchicine. The right's impact on the pharmaceutical industry is discussed.
