- Abstract
Aim of the study: Congenital anorectal malformations are frequently associated with disturbances of the function of the lower urinary tract. Diagnostic imaging techniques allow visualization of both the sacral bone and the spinal cord. The purpose of the investigations was to evaluate the function of the lower urinary tract and to determine the incidence and type of spinal cord anomalies associated with anorectal malformations. Materials and methods: The analyses were carried out based on the data collected from children with anorectal malformations treated from 1995 to 2002. Eighty pediatric patients received treatment for anorectal malformations. The function of lower urinary tract was determined by urodynamic investigations. Magnetic resonance (MRI) was used to disclose possible spinal cord anomalies. Results: Follow-up examinations were carried out in 41 patients. Urodynamic investigations were performed in 39 children. Abnormal urodynamic test results were found in 21 patients (54%). MRI was performed in 32 patients; the following spinal cord anomalies were disclosed in eight children (24%): terminal ilium lipoma, syringomyelia, central canal widening, tethered spinal cord and presacral lipoma. Conclusions: It is recommended that children with anorectal malformations undergo examination of the function of the lower urinary tract. Based on MRI, spinal cord anomalies are present in 24% of patients with anorectal malformations. The tethered spinal cord is not main spinal cord anomaly in children with anorectal malformations.
