- Abstract
Chronic pain (CP) is a common, complex, and highly stressful health problem, which generates an important impact in quality of life. Typically, CP presents as the result of an injury or a disease, such as cancer. However, CP is distressing enough that it may be viewed as a disease on its own, and not simply a symptom accompanying another condition, to the point of receiving its own separate definition and classification. CP is a genuine public health issue, being a burden to both, patients and health systems. Pain is a frequent reason for consultation in primary care which may many times be resolved by a general physician. Nevertheless, CP is a diagnostic and therapeutic challenge, requiring in many occasions specialist management, particularly by anesthesiologists. Given the large catalogue of invasive and non-invasive treatment alternatives, every case of CP must be individually assessed to determine the best course of action for each patient. The role of the anesthesiologist in this context centers on their broad knowledge of the pathophysiology of pain, thus being the choice reference medic for CP.
