- Title
Hurricanes Create a Crossroads for Hydrological Management of the Mississippi River Delta.
- Authors
Keim, Richard F.; Blanford, William J.
- Abstract
The article comments on the implications of the flooding of New Orleans, Louisiana by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita for the hydrological management of the Mississippi River Delta. Water-control structures of the Mississippi River and its distributaries have altered the processes responsible for forming and maintaining the delta. The maintenance costs will be commensurate with the scale of the management structures. Combining flood protection and restoration efforts into a single effort can improve levee effectiveness because wetlands will protect levees from high-energy wind and waves.
