- Abstract
It was demonstrated that pyrolysis gas chromatography is a suitable method for identifying lignins by comparing unknown gas chromatgrams of pyrolysis products (GC pyrogram) to known GC pyrograms without qualitative or quantitative analysis of the separated pyrolysis products. Lignins extracted by different methods from wood chips and flours were pyrolysed at a maximum temperature of 473 K for 30 seconds in a stream of nitrogen. The pyrolysis products were collected in a liquid nitrogen trap and the ethanol soluble fraction was studied by gas chromatography. The GC pyrograms were compared by the congruence and the cosine method, which are based on vector algebra. The results show that different lignins have their own gas Chromatographie fingerprints. Unknown lignin samples can be identified by comparing the shape of its GC pyrogram to those of known samples.
