- Abstract
In this paper we give special emphasis to the mathematic concepts involved in the building of the oiler and we seek to contribute to the development, dissemination and preservation of one of the oldest traditional arts and crafts - the coppersmith – of one region of northern Portugal - the region of Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro. We developed a study on knowledge (ethno) mathematics involved in building an oiler as elements that can promote a possible relationship with mathematics and the possible contribution to elementary mathematics education. As a result, we identified geometric properties (in Portugal) and that will lead students to discover mathematics through the analysis of this cultural artifact. The study was developed through a literature review and fieldwork with participant observation through the interviews to coppersmiths in this northeastern region of Portugal.
