- Title
THE FORTUNATE ISLAND OF MONHEGAN.
- Authors
JENNEY, CHARLES FRANCIS
- Abstract
An essay is presented on the history of the island of Monhegan. The author discusses the landing of the ship "Archangel," commanded by captain George Waymouth, on the island and comments on the linguistic origin and meaning of the island's name. A description of the fisheries near the island by explorer John Smith is noted. The author suggests Indians visited the island but did not live there due to the lack of wildlife. A land grant for Monhegan to merchant Abraham Jennings is noted.
