- Abstract
The article focuses on the development of the curriculum for natural sciences in Grand Rapids, Michigan. The curriculum construction in Grand Rapids has been going on for the past five years. Committees of principals and teachers under the direction of Dr. George C. Kyte of the University of Michigan created courses of study for each subject matter field. In order to make the curriculum beneficial to the teachers each course is made on the same plan. The section titled procedure focuses on grade placement of materials for grades four, five and six. A type unit precedes the content for each grade. A unit on the study of weather started after several disasters took place on Lake Michigan. The materials which were used included reference books and weather maps from Chicago. During the activities which were carried on the children made a trip to the weather bureau. The children benefited from the study since they gained knowledge about the cause of winds, work of the weather bureau and barometric pressure.
