- Abstract
2 Simões PB, Marcos R. Being rational over blood ratios in veterinary hematology. We are thankful to Simões and Marcos for their letter to the editor following our recent work.1 The letter raises very pertinent and interesting arguments, complementing the published literature on the subject and contextualizes a rationale approach on blood cell ratios (BCR).2 We want to address our reply as comments to the main topics approached in the letter: I Blood smear evaluation and pitfalls of automatic analyzers i :Manual differential count, despite being the gold standard method, can also be affected by inter-observer variation and by the lower number of cells evaluated, namely, when leucopenia exists.3 If BCR becomes widely used by clinicians and calculated upon manual differentials, it will demand human and time-consuming resources especially, if normoblastemia and leukopenia are relevant and complex calculations for leucocyte corrections are needed.4 In this way, test cost and time delay in reporting, can, possibly, limit BCR principal advantages and clinical applicability.
