WHICH BIBLE DID CHAUCER USE? THE BIBLICAL TRAGEDIES IN THE MONK'S TALE.
- Authors
Holton, Amanda
- Abstract
A literary criticism of the "Monk's Tale" by Geoffrey Chaucer is presented. It analyzes the book in order to ascertain by which Bible the author was influenced, which include the Latin Vulgate, the "Bible historiale," and the Wycliffite Bible. A comparison between phrases in the Bibles and idioms in Chaucer's "Monk's Tale" and "Canterbury Tales" is provided. The arguments of J.H. Ramsay and Dudley R. Johnson are critiqued.
