- Abstract
The article focuses on the place-name origin of Carrageen, seaweed. The common name of the seaweed Chondrus Cripus is Carrageen moss. The origin of this name was discusses by M.E. Mitchell and M.D. Guiry, who provide valuable documentation of its early use. The name Carrageen first appeared in the Dublin Suanders' Newsletter and Daily Advertiser of 22nd October 1829. The earliest derivation of the name Carrageen was offered by David Landsborough in 1849. Mitchell and Guiry reject the place-name origin of Carrageen on very slender grounds; in fact many more arguments than they muster can be urged against this derivation.
