- Abstract
The article states that one of the favorite songs in the Old Woman's Oratory--1751-some point in the 1760s--was a burlesque cantata called "The Dust Cart." The Oratory was a variety show, the prevailing tone of which was a parody of everything popular. The burlesque cantata became, after the performance of "The Dust Cart," a popular concert item that made fun of the form and the fioriture, or long musical ornamentation on a single word, of the continental cantata. It has long been known that poet Christopher Smart was the presiding spirit of the Oratory from its opening at least until 1754-5. Now there is convincing evidence that Smart was the author of "The Dust Cart," first sung in 1753.
