- Abstract
INTRODUCTION: Depression is a mood disorder that modulates the emotions of individuals, causing persistent sadness, loss of pleasure in daily activities, insomnia, loss of appetite, among other symptoms. This disorder affects thousands of people such as young people, the elderly, men and women, with a higher prevalence in women. Studies indicate that the highest prevalence in women is due to physiological and hormonal differences. PURPOSE: to analyze the differences between the sexes, in order to identify which group most prone to depressive disorders therefore, to the use of antidepressants among the university students. METHODS: integrative review, considering all stages of the search. In order to obtain better results, the question "what are the differences in the use of antidepressants between female and male university students?" After elaborating it is problematic, it was broken for the choice of descriptors, it was used as keywords: "antidepressants," "Depression in university students," "depression in young people," "pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics difference in depression." RESULTS: A total of 886 articles were obtained, having been excluded because they did not fit the purpose of this review through the analysis of the article title, abstract or because they were repeated, Thirteen articles were selected for analysis, which were included in this review. CONCLUSION: Therefore, it was identified that there is a higher prevalence of depressive disorders in women, this is due to physiological and hormonal differences. The most usual treatment is medication, with the use of antidepressants that work in the central nervous system and that increase the concentration of neurotransmitters such as noradrenaline and serotonin.
