- Abstract
Objective: Understand the characteristics, hormonal and genetic influences, diagnosis and treatment options of fibroadenoma. Methods: This is a descriptive literature review, where a bibliographical survey was carried out through the combined use of different descriptors, such as breast fibroadenoma, etiology, pathogenesis, diagnosis, treatment and updates, in the Scielo, Google Scholar and PubMED. Results/Discussion: The origin of breast fibroadenomas, although partially understood, suggests an influence of hormonal and genetic factors. The notable estrogen dependence of these tumors, more common in women of childbearing age, raises the possibility of regression at menopause. Furthermore, they may have a genetic predisposition, it is believed that there is an association with mutations in the bcl-2 and MED12 genes. Conclusion: The pathogenesis of fibroadenomas is not yet completely understood, and although there is hormonal dependence, these tumors do not fully respond to anti-estrogenic treatments. However, they were associated with mutations in the bcl-2 and MED12 genes.
