- Abstract
The article discusses two books: "Explaining Successes in Africa: Things Don't Always Fall Apart" by Erin Accampo Hern and "Sing and Sing On: Sentinel Musicians and the Making of the Ethiopian American Diaspora" by Kay Kaufman Shelemay. "Explaining Successes in Africa" challenges the negative narrative about Africa by highlighting successful stories of African countries. The author uses a comparative methodology to analyze economic development, governance, public health, climate adaptation, and gender equality in selected African countries. "Sing and Sing On" explores the lives of musicians from Ethiopia and the Horn of Africa, focusing on the effects of the Ethiopian revolution on the country's musical culture. The author provides historical depth through ethnographic and ethnomusicological perspectives. Both books offer valuable insights into their respective topics and are recommended for scholars, students, and general readers interested in Africa and Ethiopian music.
