- Abstract
Neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) comprise a group of diseases that mostly affect poor populations and peripheral countries. They are considered “neglected” because they do not receive sufficient resources from governments and research institutions. This theoretical- reflective essay was built from observation of epidemiological data, critical reflection and reading of scientific articles. The objective was to discuss NTDs and their social impacts, motivated by the resurgence of human rabies in the country, a disease that is not part of the prioritary NTDs of Brazil. In 2018, there was an outbreak of human rabies in Melgaço (PA), where over ten children between 3 and 12 years old died after rabies virus exposure. The city has the lowest HDI of Brazil, 0,418, and 96% of its population has an income below half a minimum wage. Outbreaks occurred in the Amazon in previous years, in addition to isolated cases in other states. WHO maintains the goal of eliminating dog-mediated human rabies until 2030, but wild animals continue to represent risk to the most vulnerable populations and resources still are incipient. It is necessary to seek comprehensive strategies that would strengthen epidemiological surveillance, action of primary health care and prevention and research work on these diseases.
