- Abstract
Dear Editor, Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is an oftentimes debilitating skin condition characterized by recurring abscesses and sinus tracts, typically in intertriginous regions.[1] HS patients have an increased utilization of high-cost settings (emergency department, inpatient hospitalization).[[2]] Historically HS has been treated by many different specialties but owned by none.[4] In this study, we sought to analyze the breakdown of specialties that diagnose and manage HS patients at an academic medical center and examine utilization of the HS specialty clinic. Among the 1023 patients, initial HS diagnosis was made by primary care providers (PCPs) for 339 (33%) patients and by dermatologists for 274 (27%) patients (Fig.). Sixty-seven (7%) patients went to the emergency department, 52 (5%) patients to urgent care, and 32 (3%) patients were hospitalized at least once for HS.
