- Abstract
The article presents a brief overview of the findings of a report released by Human Rights Watch, a U.S.-based international human rights organization, condemning key aspects of Egypt's divorce system. Human Rights Watch saw the aspects of Egypt's divorce system as a violation of the right to equality before the law, nondiscrimination, and equality in marriage and divorce as enshrined in international human rights law. The report relied on over one hundred interviews with Egyptian women with pending or finalized divorce cases, lawyers, women's rights activists, and government officials throughout the country.
